Visit E Farm Biotech

On 19th December, 2023, a group of 18 S.1 students travelled to Sheung Shui to visit E
Farm Biotech which is one of the city’s pioneer biotech farms which utilizes black
soldier flies to tackle food waste.

During the visit, the students got to learn hands on from separating food from its
packaging with their bare hands to sampling the dried insect larvae. As the guide
explained in detail how each part of the larvae was harvested thoroughly, the students
were interacting with the wiggly companions. Hand cream, sanitizing gel, fertilizers
and pet food are all practical uses of the insect. The students learnt first hand of how
future solution of food waste in the city calls for the rise of biotechnology with a
change in lifestyle.

‘Once you close your eyes, they taste like chips! ‘ exclaimed one of the students, as he
munched on the crunchy dried larvae.
‘Why can’t we find these dried insects on the shelves of supermarkets?’
‘Well, it isn’t because the insects aren’t safe. They just aren’t culturally accepted.
Hence, they are not registered as proper food products.’ Explained, the guide.

E Farm Biotech is the first step for many. Students returned to school inspired and
eager to share about the way of the future.
