Xuelong 2 Scientists Meet HK Students

The nation’s 40th Chinese Antarctic scientific expedition team - in Hong Kong on board the first domestically built Antarctic research icebreaker Xuelong 2 - shared their polar research and exploration experiences with students at the Science Museum and online meeting on 10 April 2024.

During the event, students had the opportunity to connect with scientists stationed at Zhongshan Station in Antarctica. The scientists not only explained polar-related phenomena such as the midnight sun and polar night but also shared their experiences from their expeditions and encouraged the younger generation to pursue careers in polar scientific research.

Students from our school eagerly raised their hands to ask questions. Li Hoi Ki, a student from Class 3A, was selected to ask a question to scientist Li Zhengyang: "What factors are considered when choosing an observation site for astronomical observations? What are the advantages of the Dome A region, where China's Kunlun Station in Antarctica is located, compared to other locations?"

At the end of the meeting, the scientists expressed their hope that Hong Kong students would gain a better understanding of the impact of science on life, as well as the achievements of our country in scientific exploration and its contributions to mitigating global warming.
